Journey into Quilting and Judging:
My journey as a fiber artist began at the age of four, when I received my first sewing machine, a small chainstitch model. What started as curiosity quickly became a lifelong passion shaped through years of participation in 4-H garment construction and modeling competitions from childhood through college. Those early experiences taught me not only technical skill and discipline, but also the confidence that comes from creating something meaningful by hand.
Quilting became the art form where I found my true creative voice. I am especially drawn to the balance of precision, color, texture, and storytelling that quilts uniquely offer. Every quilt represents a connection between tradition and personal expression, combining craftsmanship with emotion, memory, and purpose. As a longarm quilter, I see quilting as the final layer of artistry that brings movement, depth, and life to each piece.
Teaching is equally important to my creative practice. As a retired public school teacher, I find great fulfillment in helping new quilters discover their abilities and gain confidence in their own artistic journeys. Whether guiding someone through their first quilt or helping refine advanced techniques, I believe quilting preserves community, encourages creativity, and connects generations through shared knowledge and experience.
Today, as a candidate for National Certified Quilt Judge Certification, I continue to deepen my understanding of design, construction, and the historical significance of quilting. This pursuit reflects my commitment to excellence, education, and honoring the artistry within the quilting community. Through both my own work and my mentorship of others, I strive to celebrate the enduring beauty, craftsmanship, and tradition of quilting while encouraging innovation and personal expression in every stitch.
With Joy,
Kathy
